Noticing signs of suicidality in a young person comes from someone who is part of their everyday world and takes the time to listen with care. When a peer youth leader or a parent builds trust through genuine listening, they’re in a position to hear subtle changes in mood, behavior, or talk of hopelessness that might not be obvious to others. That listening creates a safe space for the young person to open up, share painful feelings, and reveal thoughts they’re not ready to express to strangers or authority figures. From there, the listener can connect them to support resources or professionals.

A random stranger wouldn’t have the ongoing relationship or enough context to notice patterns over time. A coach who only lectures may miss opportunities to hear what the youth is really feeling and won’t foster the trusting rapport needed for disclosure. An administrator who doesn’t interact enough with students likewise lacks the day-to-day insight to recognize warning signs.
